I have just encountered this as well and could not leave a review. I called them to voice my feelings. It honestly feels like extortion, doesn’t it? It is really a discriminatory practice that targets people of lesser means. It is unfair and greedy as well. It is not ethical.

This just happened to me. The way to solve that problem is to ban any company found to be creating fake reviews. not penalize legitimate reviews. That won’t stop the fake reviews. It will drive away potential customers. I’m not going to buy something without being able to leave reviews, & in turn, I won’t spend enough to be able to leave a review for someone else to read. They really didn’t think that through. I hope it blows up in their face. Those who disagree with this rule can show Amazon with our mouse clicks.

In reply to h5mind. It's been a problem since reviews went online for Amazon or anyone else. Entire call centers were devoted to creating fake reviews for products willing to pay for it... this is just one of the latest ways Amazon has tried to deal with it. In fact, books are the only product where reviews can be left without having purchased the product from Amazon because of the long history of books and early ARC reviews. Amazon banned reviews on free products for everything else entirely.

I was faced with the same dilemma after buying and reading a book recently. Are unscrupulous sellers really hawking fake reviews of books?

Great article. Thanks for explaining things so well. I’m one of those who have been blocked from posting honest reviews – although I have purchased a few books lately, just not enough to become eligible. It’s a shame that Amazon’s solution seems to be doing as much bad as it does good.

I got the book as a gift from my daughter thru the
Amazon, but could not post reviews on it, because I
I did not buy it.Then I bought the book and still
could not post the review because I did not spend $50.00. This reminds me never to shop at Amazon, or
at east until this $50.00 requirement is removed.

Amazon has now shown by this and removing Parler that they believe themselves to be greater than god. Deleteing my account as soon as I use my gift card balance. Never again. Bezos can go eff himself. Elon Musk is richer dude, you arent God.

This $50 rule to review books (my interest) shows just how mercenary Amazon is. Over many years I have spent hundreds of dollars at Amazon, but not for a year. Now I can’t review books.
When I like a books I give positive reviews. If I don’t like a book I explain why, not trashing out of pique.Obviously Amazon are not interested in informed discourse, just the money.
